Fun Fact: Egg binding in birds occurs when the egg cannot be passed. It’s a serious condition. It can occur in any female bird but it’s more common among parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels, and finches. If not treated properly, it can be fatal. In general, the condition can be caused by a calcium deficiency in a bird’s diet. If your female parakeet or cockatiel has a swollen abdomen, wags its tail frequently and has difficulty balancing on her perch, contact her vet for treatment options.
